Yoga can be defined as the science of creating balance between body and soul, as well as between rest and activity.
Yoga works on two levels:
1. It makes us stronger and fills our energy depots, allowing us to cope as we rest and relax.
2. It trains us to be capable at any given moment to remove the things that disturb our concentration, restrict us, and make us restless.
There are many different forms of yoga.
The type of yoga that I typically practice is Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is a sequence of asanas, or poses, that train the body, soul, and mind. Hatha means “power” and “strength.”
Power Yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga. Many believe it to be the type of yoga that can most easily be adjusted to an individual’s capabilities. Power Yoga is a vigorous type of yoga that allows you to carry your own weight through a combination of movements, poses, and deep breathing.
The power in yoga comes from working with prana, the life power energy. The more prana that flows along the spine, the more balanced, strong, and positive you feel. Power Yoga builds up strength and focus, eliminates toxic substances and waste products from the body, and reduces stress and tension in joints and muscles. As a result, imbalances in the body are reduced while flexibility and mobility improve.
Yoga will make you a better athlete. Even if you are never able to touch your toes, gaining flexibility, balance, and whole body strength will improve your form, efficiency, and power. The practice of yoga’s physical, mental and spiritual approach will teach you how to integrate the body, breathing, and the mental focus to remain calm in the face of intense situations. These practices translate into good habits that carry across all aspects of your life.
Sport Yoga is a vigorous form of Hatha yoga that demands you use your body and carry your own weight through a combination of movements, poses, and deep breaths. It is a type of yoga that can easily adjust to an individual’s capabilities.
Sport Yoga builds up strength and focus, eliminates poisonous substances and waste products from the body, and reduces stress and tension in joints and muscles. As a result, imbalances in the body are reduced, and flexibility and mobility improve.
