Don't think I'm crazy....I know, Personal Trainer saying we need less balance. Trust me, I'm questioning myself as I type those words...
Ok...ok...I'll explain. Balance-A condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions. Ok, so who decides what these correct proportions are for me? You??? My neighbor??? The cashier in the grocery store??? I don't think any of these are correct in terms of what is being balanced to me. If I was so focused on balancing out my life perfectly there would be no way I could do all that I do. Do I spend just as much time sleeping as I do working??? HA! That's funny. There isn't enough time in the day. Do I get exactly the same amount of workout time everyday? No way! Today is a Monday so I have more time to workout because I schedule myself less work time on Mondays because well lets be honest, I hate Mondays. So, today I will be working out more than I will be tomorrow because tomorrow I don't have as much time. Does this mean I'm unbalanced or I'm failing at having balance in my life? NO!!!!! This "Balance" we are suppose to have with everything is constantly being judged not only by others but we judge ourselves. I find myself sitting down at night thinking wow, I feel like I accomplished nothing today because I spent too much time working or other way around I spent too much time goofing off or playing with the kids. This is when I have to tell myself to quit trying to balance everything on a daily basis. I physically and mentally am unable to do it. Not going to lie. I'm a Type "A" personality and have to have everything perfect so coming from me saying it's not possible, then it's not possible! Relax! Enjoy life! Don't focus on how you balanced everything that day. Look at your life in a whole. Answer this question not thinking of how today is going for you. Answer how life is going in general. Are you eating well? If I'm answering for today then no, not really. I ate a pop tart earlier. Yeah, trainer of the day award goes to me!!! But, if I was answering the question right my answer would be yeah, I am eating well. I choose to eat healthy protein, veggies, fruit, healthy carbs, drink plenty of water, don't eat too much sugar, etc. I eat a very well BALANCED diet. Today, no. No I haven't. But in life, YES!! Now, don't take this as me saying go eat whatever you want whenever you want or skip workouts for a week. This isn't what I mean. Just find the right amount of balance for you! If any of you are wanting any extra help on finding what works for your needs, don't hesitate on contacting me for a consult to see if we can figure out the right BALANCE for you!! Happy Snowy Day here in Indiana! -Laura

Everybody always looks at Workouts as this dreaded hour that you take out of your life to go to a gym and use some boring machines while you find a sitter for your kids or your spouse is staying home to watch them.
This is NOT the way I live and I'm a Personal Trainer so there is definitely no need for you to live this way. Being fit and healthy does not mean boring and dreaded. Not only do we all workout together as a family quite often, but we enjoy it and don't consider it a workout. We make it fun not just for us but for the kiddos. Instead of sitting down to play a video game with your kid or a watch a tv show, get them outside on a hike, play some ball, jump on the trampoline, go kayaking or paddle boarding. Anything that involves movement. Even on days that its cold or nasty outside there is plenty to do inside that is active and fun for everyone. For example, my husband and son have a pull-up battle going on at the moment. Funny thing is that my husband didn't even know this was happening because he just decided to start doing as many pull-ups as he could when he wakes up in the morning and when he goes to bed and our son saw this and has now started building up how many he can do. My husband isn't even home when our son is doing this but his example is leading him to do this while we are working. If he saw us just sitting around all day long on the internet or watching tv and eating unhealthy then this is what he would be doing. We don't complain about workouts. We get excited to do active things instead of blogging about how awful workouts are or how awful it is to eat healthy and things not pay off the way we want it to. So, stop dreading the workouts. Get your kiddos and spouse involved. You will not only see the health improvements in everyone but you will also see their happiness improve and the communication between each other also thrive. Recently I led a Fitness Retreat in Nicaragua. You think "Oh, not my thing. I like to have fun during my vacations." Well, that is EXACTLY what we did! Yes, we had Fitness classes including HIIT workouts, Yoga, and Pilates... but that's not all we did. So, I'm going to summarize what all went on to give a little insight so that maybe someday you will join me on one of these great trips. Also, enjoy some of the fun pictures that we got on this last trip. First day, flights arrive in Managua, Nicaragua where you get off your flight to meet a friendly driver holding a sign with your name on it so you know this is your transportation to the resort which was a 2.5 hour drive through the jungle and small towns with great scenery, including some awesome Volcanos and the second largest Jesus Statue in the World. (Every destination is different so understand I am just filling you in on this last trip I had recently to Nicaragua as an example of how things go.) So, arriving at the Resort you meet the Hosts that will be helping you with anything you need while on your stay. On this trip, our destination was Buena Vista Surf Club which is located at Maderas Beach. I HIGHLY recommend! Buena Vista Surf Club gave us each our own private bungalow, which I might add that it overlooks the Pacific Ocean and you have Monkeys hanging out in trees all around you! Breakfast and Dinner was included everyday in the retreat package and it was amazing! We were never hungry! Lunches we would grab where we were hanging out that day. First full day there we woke up, had a Pilates class followed by a Yoga class and then on to Breakfast. After Breakfast we decided that we wanted to go do something fun all together to get to know each other better so we Chartered a Sailboat with Two Guys Adventures. I HIGHLY recommend them as well! So, we went sailing from San Juan Del Sur to a private beach and did some swimming and relaxing. They provided us with Pizza and drinks on the boat. Yes...PIZZA, and yes, this is a FITNESS RETREAT! Most are unaware that a healthy lifestyle does NOT include living your life perfectly focused on consuming everything healthy and not enjoying the things you love. A healthy happy lifestyle is about balance. This trip gave us balance for sure with all the great workouts we did and all the fun and great food we enjoyed! While in San Juan Del Sur we hit up some local shops and got to try some local drinks and smoothies which were delicious! After our sailing and town experience we headed back to our resort for dinner and chill time around the resort. The following days we enjoyed HIIT class (high intensity interval training) in the morning followed by yoga and then breakfast. Daytime between Breakfast and Dinner was filled with Surf lessons, massages, drinks on the beach relaxing, hiking the trails, walking the beach, eating beach tacos, local shopping in town, horseback riding, zip lining...whatever we wanted to do. We did things together and separate. There was no obligation to hangout as a group at all but was also no obligation to find something for yourself to do on your own. We found that some days we pushed really hard on our workouts and didn't spend as much time relaxing. Then there were days we backed down on our workouts because we felt the group out and realized everybody needed more of a chill day to recover. If you have ever surfed in your life you can understand the soreness and exhaustion that comes from this...lol. Nobody was ever pressured into pushing too hard for their ability but those who wanted to be pushed, were pushed! I feel safe to say that there wasn't anyone on this trip who regretted going! If any of this sounds like something you might be interested in doing sometime, make sure to follow me on Instagram @lthornetraining and Facebook to stay up on all the trips I offer. I also offer online training which is really nice for those who don't live close and want to receive my workouts and fitness/nutrition advice. I hope to meet you soon on a wonderful fitness adventure!

Today I am posting this blog because many of you have seen on my Facebook page today that one of my amazing clients finished up her 24 Day Challenge with me and lost 22.25 inches and 2% of her body fat in those 24 days. 24 days!!!! Seems crazy and bogus lies right??? Wrong! This girl met with me and went over how she wanted to change the way she takes care of her body. I recommended she start doing Personal Training with me 2 days a week and do cardiovascular exercise on 6 days a week. We also changed up her core nutrition which was a real bonus to her plan. AdvoCare, which is a company I use and recommend to all my clients for their core nutrition and added supplements to help get the most of their workouts, is what I started her on. The products I started her on are part of Advocare 24 day Challenge. The first 10 days are about cleansing your body of toxins, preparing for optimal nutrient absorption. During the Max Phase, days 11-24, you’ll give your body the best tools to achieve your next weight-management goal. During this challenge I help set you up on the plan and help you choose the right nutrition for your needs. For anybody wanting a great way to jump start your weight loss, this is the place to start! If anybody is interest in learning more, feel free to shoot me an email and we can set up an appointment to go over everything.
